Stewart Clan Magazine

George Thomas Edson, born in Marcus Iowa on January 2, 1884, is best known for his monthly publication of the Stewart Clan Magazine (SCM) from July 1922 to December 1970. He started out searching for his Stewart family road block, his connection to Walter Stewart of Perthshire, Scotland through Walter's grandson, John Stewart, an original settler of Londonderry, New Hampshire. Although Edson published from Nebraska and Kansas, he made many trips east searching for records of the Stewart family. He also had the assistance of an avid Stewart family researcher in New York City, Horace W. Dickerson.

Beatrice Daily Sun, August 2, 1948

In his first issue, Edson stated his purpose for publishing the magazine: "In this little magazine, the editor will endeavor to crowd all the essential records available of New England and New York Stewart families from the immigrant ancestor down to about 1850."

He included material from previously published sources, his own researches, and that submitted by other researchers. He took one year off, from July 1930 to June 1931, but otherwise published an issue every month from beginning to end. Further information on Edson can be found at:

It the 1980's and 1990's Mary Stewart Kyritsis of New York and Athens, Greece started her own project - to make a useful index for the 570 issues of the SCM. She completed the index and published it online, but the pages have since been removed. Since it is a valuable resource for Stewart family researchers, I copied the site from the "Wayback Machine" (Archive.com) and uploaded it to my website. I added one small improvement - linking all of the key references to the applicable page of the SCM hosted at FamilySearch.org.

Using the index is fairly simple. Suppose you want to find information on Samuel Stewart, son of Robert and Bethia. From the main index page (http://hereldstuart.net/SCM/), under "STEWARTS," and under "Alphabetically by first name," click on the letter S. Since there are many Samuels, you need some point of distinction. I would do a page search (Cntl-F) for Bethia, and it will go straight to the correct Samuel. Jot down the references - A14, A221, A222, etc.

Then return to the main index, and click on "Key," which is listed as number 3 near the top of the page. Chose Tome A, and find page 14, which is part of Volume I, number 4 (Oct 1922). Click on that link, and the FamilySearch page containing that issue will open. After logging in, you will be able to read the article written by Mr. Edson.

I would like to simplify the use of the index, such as somehow listing the Tomes across the bottom of each index page, allowing access to the references without returning to the main index page. If you have any other suggestions for making this index more useful, please let me know.
